As at the time of filing this report, the tweet has already attracted 17.7k retweets and 228.2k likes, pointing to the popularity of Musk within the Twitter community and as a crypto influencer.
Musk has been known to be instrumental in the shilling of some cryptocurrencies, especially Dogecoin and even Bitcoin which his company, Tesla made a move to start accepting as a means of payments even though it later suspended it. Musk has been said to have made another fortune via cryptocurrency by shilling coins of his choice and selling them after their prices have soared as a result of his promotional activities on such coins.
Musk’s EV company, Tesla bought 46,000 bitcoins last February when the price of the asset was just above $32,000. They would later sell 10% of their coins. It is interesting to note that Musk has also promoted the meme coin DOGE, apart from Bitcoin.
There are 21 million bitcoins that could go into circulation and whales such as Musk have shown the extent of the market power that high net worth individuals and corporations have in the market. Furthermore, the fact that the opinion of people like Musk matter makes it possible that they could wield a lot of influence in determining the direction of the market by projecting their choices through social media such as Twitter as Musk is wont to do.
Musk became the 4th richest person as the price of Tesla shares soared above $2000 last August. This gave him a net worth of $101 billion behind Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates and Mark Zukerberg whose wealth are valued at $202 billion, $124 billion and $115 billion respectively.
