How to play Blackjack

Do you want to play blackjack and actually win but wonder how? This post will show you how to play this popular table game. First, let us understand what the game is and the rules that are associated with it, since this is the key to a successful game.

What is Blackjack?

Blackjack is a card game that pitches you against the dealer. The objective is to beat them by making sure that you get a value as close to 21 as possible.

This can be accomplished easily if your first hand gives you 2 cards that are close to 21. While at it, you should hope that the dealer’s hand is lower than what you drew or over the 21 value.

As with all games that are mainly dependent on luck and minimal skills, blackjack demands that you do all that is possible to keep you in the game and hopefully win it. So generally bear in mind that you have to gain a higher value than the dealer without going over 21.

Bear in mind that this is a game between you and the dealer, even if there are other participants in the game. Your objective is the same as if there is no other player on the table.

In online versions of the game, you are less distracted since there may be no other players as in the case of physical casinos. The rule is the same, beat the dealer without crossing 21.

Card Values in Blackjack

You should know the value of each card in the deck. Some of them have their face value while others do not. The Ace could be counted as 1 or 11. This is dependent on which of the values would help you most at that point in the game. If the 11 value would give you a total more than 21, you’d have to count your value as 1.

The Queen, King and Jack are each valued as 10. This implies that these are cards that you should covet. An ace with any of them gives you a win over the dealer.

Constitution of Blackjack Table

In the physical casinos, you would see up to 7 players on a table with the dealer seated opposite the semi circular table.

The game starts after the players buy chips. These are used in placing the wager. The dealer would not take cash for the game since it is against house rules.

Also, they would not take the money from your hands. You would have to place it on the blackjack table. Then the dealer gives the player the chips that are equivalent to their wager. To avoid suspicion and cheating, the dealer and players are not allowed to give or take anything from one another.

In the online version of the game, this suspicion is eliminated since the player does not see the dealer. The blockchain version of the game is even safer since it could be checked on the blockchain if the game is provably fair or rigged by the house.

Playing The Blackjack

In the game proper, the player places their wager before the dealer commences the hand. The dealer deals the cards in a clockwise direction, all the cards facing down while the dealer’s face up. When all the players have been dealt 2 cards each, the dealer should also have 2, one facing up and the other down.

The dealer starts from the left so the player there first plays their hand. The value of each hand is from 4 to 21. An ace and a queen gives a player 21 which is considered a blackjack. If the dealer doesn’t have a blackjack, the player with a blackjack is paid one and half times their bet.

This means that a bet of $100 would earn the player $150 and they do not need to complete the round. Some casinos pay 6 to 5 instead of 3 to 2.

However, if the dealer has a blackjack, the player with blackjack would have their bet returned.

When there’s no blackjack, each player plays their hand based on certain rules. These are not communicated verbally but with gesticulations so that the casino camera could record it.

This means that your first two cards are acceptable, they didn’t cross the 21 limit. In the casino you can open your hand over the table as an indication that you’re qualified for the round.

This involves tapping a finger on the felt to show that you need an improvement in the value of your card. This would cause the dealer to deal more cards to you, one at a time until you stand of go over the 21 mark of “burst”.

Double Down

If you think you have a good chance with your combination, consider a double down. This entails doubling your initial bet and being dealt just one card by the dealer. The extra card is placed sideways showing that it is your final card that forecloses the possibility of being dealt another.

Some casinos support doubling for amounts lower than your initial wage, even though there is no marked advantage to the player.

If you were dealt two identical cards of equal value, you can ask for one of them to become the first card in another hand. This automatically makes each card your first in each hand.

This rule is also applied to face cards since they have equal values. Think of a king and a joker and what each would contribute to your game on two hands instead of one. To split, you have to make another wager equal to the first. In a block and mortar casino, you indicate split with the peace sign.

This is almost like giving up for the option of recovering half of your bet. Drawing a line behind the felt under your cards would signal  a surrender to the dealer. This is done if you think your initial hand is not good enough for you to win.

Some Strategies To Adopt

Be sure that you check the dealer’s hand before making your move. If their value is 2 to 6, you can hope that they will go bust. If it is up to 7 to 10, you have to play as aggressively as you can to improve your odds.

Avoid insurance because it improves the house edge to 6%. This means that you’ll struggle even harder to win. Also, do not forget to split aces and 8s whenever they occur.
