Solana Status Says Block Production On Solana Mainnet Beta Has Halted

Solana network is down

Block production on the Solana mainnet beta has halted. This was revealed by Solana Status, the channel dedicated to updates on the state of the Solana website and blockchain.

According to a Twitter post made at 6.56 PM (Paris Time) on June 1, 2022, the Solana team said that the network has been halted. It further advised validators to prepare for a restart.

A Bug On Mainnet

The update further explained that the halt in block production was as a result of a bug. It says:

“Earlier today a bug in the durable nonce transactions feature led to nondeterminism when nodes generated different results for the same block, which prevented the network from advancing.”

It further states that Engineers are preparing a temporary measure that would overwrite the affected durable nonce. The new release (v1.9.28/v1.10.23) is pending when the bug is patched.

User Funds Are Safe

The statement said that there is no cause for alarm because the Solana network is safe. It emphasized that user funds are also safe and added that validators are working on the restart from the highest confirmed block.

At the time of reporting, the restart instruction has been on the platform for 41 minutes. Apparently, the validators and Solana Engineers are still working on getting the network into production mode once again.

Recurring Network Outage

This is not the first time that the Solana network is down. On April 30, the Solana mainnet suffered an outage for 7 hours. The Twitter post that reported that outage says:

“On April 30th, Solana’s Mainnet Beta cluster suffered a 7 hour outage caused by stalled consensus. Below is an investigation into the cause of the outage, and the steps core developers are taking to increase network resiliency and stability”

The Solana Advantage

A Solana user,  @misterkevin_rs expressed their dissatisfaction at the outages in their response to Solana Status saying,

“This constant beating as a Solana dev should be an exposure warning. I started to learn about other chains and hedge my investments too.”

Solana has been the darling of dApp builders due to its scalable network and low fees. This view was expressed by another user, @CoppelReal who wrote in response to @misterkevin_rs:

“What other chains are close to $SOL in terms of speed/gas fees but without the bot issue?”
